He said that Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad would take over as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
The six-year term of the current Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa ends on 29 November.
PM Sharif earlier held a cabinet meeting on Thursday where he selected Munir from a list of six candidates for the top military post.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said both the names have been sent to President Arif Alvi, who is also the Supreme Commander of Pakistan’s armed forces, for his approval.
